The plumb line and the pendulum

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ... 75 percent of Americans identify with a Christian religion, yet because there is negligence in teaching sound doctrine, multitudes are ignorant of Biblical truths (1st Timothy 4:15-16;II Timothy4:3; Titus1:9; 2:1).

God has given us a plumb line. But sadly, much of our culture and many churches no longer have an awareness of the plumb line. “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Have you ever scratched your head and said, “What! You’ve got to be kidding me?” Nicodemus scratched his head. Nick said, What! Can a man enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born? (John Chapter 3).

The gospel is simple. Man sinner, God holy, Christ Redeemer. Theology is sometimes deep, difficult and complex. Man is sinful, ignorant and sometimes stupidly rebellious. God said, come, let us reason together, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow, though they are red like crimson they shall be as wool. Salvation is threefold. Salvation equals justification, sanctification, glorification. Theology explained. Justification, one stands before God as (perfect) from the moment one “repents” and believes and receives Christ (born again). Sanctification is the process of growing in holiness (set apart for a sacred purpose) after being justified (II Peter 1:3-8). Glorification is the final stage of one’s salvation. Justification equals saved from the penalty of sin. Sanctification — being saved from the power of sin. Glorification equals saved from the very presence of sin.

God’s standard is “be perfect.” Christ is the plumb line (the perfect one). Our repentance and faith in him is our justification. The process of sanctification is our experience as we grow in God’s grace as we await glorification.

We are the pendulum. Jesus balanced truth and love perfectly. We, on the other hand, oscillate from one side of the plumb line to the other (Romans 7:7-25). Our walk goes from birth to growth to maturity; we are a work in progress (sanctification). He who begun a good work in you is faithful to bring it to completion (glorification). After our justification we are now God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do works of grace, again sanctification, we do not earn salvation!

A few other neglected Biblical doctrines: Life (when it begins, Psalm 139; gender (male and female); Biblical marriage (one man, one woman);creation (not evolution); the doctrine of the covenants; of repentance; of adoption; of reconciliation; of Christian ethics; divine Inspiration; Holy Spirit; trinity; eternal security; last things; etc.

Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Are you saved or religious? Ask yourself, “Do I have a hunger and thirst for truth and holiness? Am I growing in love and godly character? If the truth is taught (Biblical doctrines), people will have the opportunity to make an informed decision and choose to accept or reject the claims of Jesus and the salvation that He offers. Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”
