If there was one word that I would change in the Declaration of Independence it would be the word “happiness.” I would exchange it for the word “holiness.”
If everyone in our nation would pursue holiness we would indeed be a happy, victorious, God honoring people. Today many are making a new Declaration of Independence declaring their independence apart from God. It’s not a new idea. There has always been opposition against the rulership of God since the Garden of Eden. Many are familiar with the acronym RINO, republican in name only. (Psalm 144:8;11) One’s right hand is raised when taking an oath. There is a word that would describe many professing Christians today. The word is pseudo, meaning in name only.
Abraham Lincoln said, “It is the duty of nations as well as of men to owe their dependence on the overruling power of God. To confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the subline truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”
The message of John the Baptist, Christ’s forerunner, was repent. The first word out of Jesus’ mouth when he began his ministry was repent. In the book of Revelation the message to the churches was repent. 75 percent of Americans identify as being Christian. This means the Bible, for professing Christians, should be the book having preeminence in the teaching of our children. Jesus says we are to occupy until He returns (Luke 19:13). From the look of things it appears that Christians are not engaged but instead taking the path of least resistance in the battle for the souls of our children and grandchildren. If we love them this should not be.
Today, a child in a public school will receive over 14,000 hours of compulsory government controlled secular godless education. Today’s public education system has banned the Bible, prayer, the Ten Commandments and Creation from its curriculum. In our ignorance or because of our apathy we are allowing the Supreme Court to remove the higher laws of God and replacing them with the lower laws of man and it is destroying the moral fabric of our society and our children’s future.
Most of the colleges in the United States were originally Christian. Harvard, Yale, Princeton. Princeton’s crest still says “Dei subnumine viget,” which is Latin for “Under God she flourishes.”
Much of our nation’s civil laws are based on the Ten Commandments, showing us how we as a people should treat one another. God desires our love and obedience. Jesus said, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too, will love him and reveal myself to him (John 14:21).
